The Theory of Last Thursday: Omphalos Hypothesis & Reductio Ad Absurdum

The matrix resets every thursday.

According to Wikipedia, “the Omphalos hypothesis is the pseudo-scientific argument that God created the universe recently… but also introduced false evidence that the universe is of great age”[1]. This is precisely the alleged philosophy behind the last thursday theory.  This essay aims to explore the religious catechism  of the Church of Last Thursday, and explore reductio ad absurdum as the possible true core philosophy behind it. All links and evidence are found in the references section.

  • Are there any known members of this church?
  • Is the data consistent with their statements?
  • Is it a case of omphalos hypothesis or reductio ad absurdum?

SOCIO-PHILOSOPHICAL BREAKDOWN

Last thursdayism is an atheist religion practiced by the Church of Last Thursday. It makes you question the depths of your being, beliefs, concepts of time, reality, power, authority, and even your subconscious existential desires. It “is the idea that the universe was created last Thursday, but with the physical appearance of being billions of years old”[2].

The doctrine of this church has a wide spectrum of perspective. Does it also practice the reductio ad absurdum technique to highlight its atheism?  “Reductio ad absurdum is a mode of argumentation that seeks to establish a contention by deriving an absurdity from its denial, thus arguing that a thesis must be accepted because its rejection would be untenable. It is a style of reasoning that has been employed throughout the history of mathematics and philosophy from classical antiquity onwards”[3]I will be presenting the philosophical breakdown in three stages, in order to illustrate the journey one takes through their established points, creed and catechism. [4][5][6]

STAGE ONE: Everything works for YOU.

STAGE TWO: It is ALL about YOU.

STAGE THREE: YOUR perspective defines YOUR reality.

Those who are aligned with logic, sarcasm, and reason will be able to appreciate the reductio ad absurdum technique expressed through religious atheism and radical skepticism. However, for those who are suffering from psychosis, this could feel like a surreal, genuine experience. Confirmation bias juxtaposed with cognitive dissonance. That is what this genius, mind-blowing religion is.  At the end of the day, all is a matter of perspective. But, how far can we question life? Here are a few facts:

WHOIS INFORMATION &  DATA ANALYSIS

Site: www.last-thursday.org

Registered date of creation: Last thursday.

Hosted on Google sites.

RIPE information: NOT found/available.

When researching the whois information for the official website of the church of last thursday, I was shocked to find the age to be 0. What this means is that regardless of the date, the website’s data resets exactly to “today” as the date of creation [7]. Impressive! There are no known public members of such church, and it doesn’t seem to have any registered headquarters.

Then, looking a bit deeper into the “recent activity” history [8] of the site, I noticed that the content was published on Thursday 4th February, 2010. That’s seven years ago. However, the inconsistent part is that it was edited on Tuesday 16th March, 2010.  Why Tuesday?

I came across the website on the Thursday 16th March, 2017. The same date I wrote this article… What? Do YOU have any more questions?
